Tranmere
produced their finest display of the season so far to see off administration-stricken
neighbours Wrexham in a one sided derby match at the Racecourse.
5-1 is a scoreline that by no means flatters an in-form Rovers side
as they
swept away their bitter rivals in wet conditions in North Wales.
Rovers
stuck with the 3-5-2 formation that saw them lose 1-0 to Bristol
City on Monday but has served them well in numerous away matches
so far this season. Two changes were made from Monday's line-up
as Chris Dagnall came in for Paul Hall to partner Iain Hume in attack
and Theodore Whitmore replaced Danny Harrison at the centre of midfield.
Dragons
captain Dennis Lawrence had the opening chance of the game - a header
from a free kick - but his effort failed to trouble Russell Howarth
in the Rovers goal. Tranmere's
Ryan Taylor settled his side into the match with a shot from 20
yards soon after but a furious start to the game delivered no goals.
It
was Wrexham who continued to press as Chris Armstrong and Chris
Llywellyn missed two good chances after ten minutes as some of Rovers'
large travelling army were still
piling into the stadium.
The
revived partnership of pace and creativity between Hume and Dagnall
was beginning to tire the Wrexham defence and when Shaun Pejic was
slow to clear on 20
minutes, Iain Hume charged the ball down and passed to Dagnall
who calmly slotted low past Valero in the Wrexham goal.
Just
a few minutes after the goal came discouraging news for Rovers manager
Brian Little as captain Jason McAteer limped off. McAteer hasn't
had the best of luck with injuries
since joining his hometown club in the summer and was replaced by
youngster Danny Harrison.
Tranmere
continued to establish their command on the game when Theodore Whitmore
saw his shot saved by Valero and cleared to safety by the Wrexham
defence.
Iain
Hume was unlucky to hit the post on the 40 minute mark as Tranmere
continued to dominate but the Canadian forward made amends shortly
after when his turn and shot beat the keeper before going in off
the post.
Half-time: Wrexham 0 - 2 Tranmere Rovers
After
such performances so far away from home this season, many Rovers
fans expected a much more defensive approach from their team in
the second half. However, the team had
other ideas and Gareth Roberts' stunning volley in the 48th
minute sent the 2000-strong white army into a state of ecstasy.
It was the Welsh left-back's third goal of the season, his second
in two matches against his hometown club.
After
the goal, Wrexham began to assert themselves on the game for the
first time and Chris Armstrong's scrappy goal on 65 minutes
was inevitable after Carlos Edwards, Dennis Lawrence and Armstrong
himself missed chances minutes before.
An
even spell for the next 15 minutes came to an abrupt end when the
floodgates re-opened for Rovers when Theo Whitmore drilled
the ball past Valero after a neat lay-off from teammate Iain Hume.
Just
two minutes later, dreams of 5-1 were fulfilled when Hume and Rankine
combined well before Whitmore found fellow Jamaican Paul Hall
with a precise pass and the
substitute finished superbly.
Second
choice keeper Russell Howarth made a superb save late on to thwart
Wrexham's efforts and rounded off the victory to equal Tranmere's
best victory at the Racecourse and keep the pressure on Luton and
Hull at the top of League One.
