A Brief History of Tranmere Rovers
1884Belmont FC formed by two groupd of cricketers, Belmont CC and Lyndhurst Wanderers. 15th November saw the first ever game, played in blue shirts and white shorts.
188516th November Belmont FC changes its name to Tranmere Rovers. The home ground is 'Steele's Field'
1887Tranmere Rovers prize a new ground called 'Borough Road' from Tranmere Rugby Club
1889Tranmere Rovers joins their first league - the West Lancashire League
Club adopts maroon and orange halved shirts and navy blue shorts
1895'Borough Road' ground renamed to 'Prenton Park'
1899Tranmere Rovers nearly folds as all the players dessert to join Birkenhead FC
1902Tranmere Rovers rent out ground to Bikenhead Warriors Rugby Club who bring 250 seat stand
1904Tranmere revert to blue and white colours
1909A new 800-seat stand replaces the existing one
1912February - Tranmere Rovers play their last game at the old 'Prenton Park' as the land is sold to developers and the club moves across the road to the new 'Prenton Park'
1912March 9th - New 'Prenton Park' opened
1912New Manager Bert Cooke
1913Bebbington End banked up to for a Spion Kop
1914The Weekend Stand bought from the Oval Sports Ground at Port Sunlight, split in two and placed either side of the new Main Stand.
1920Borough Road side becomes fully covered
1921Tranmere joins the football league
1925Tranmere apply for re-election to the Football League
1931Prenton Road West Terrace given a roof and nicknamed 'The Cowshed'
1935New manager Jack Carr takes over from Bert Cooke
1936Jack Carr leaves after one year and Jim Knowles takes over
1938Tranmere win 3rd Division North Championship and are promoted to the 2nd Division
1939After just one year in division 2, Tranmere are relegated
1939Bill Ridding becomes manager
WW2Borough Road roof destroyed during an air raid
1945Borough Road roof repaired
1945Manager Bill Ridding leaves
1946Ernie Blackburn becomes manager
1955Noel Kelly becomes player-manager
1957Finishing 23rd in Division 3 North, Tranmere apply for re-election to the Football League
1957Peter Farrel becomes player-manager
195829th September - Tranmere's first floodlights are switched on
1961Rovers relegated and play in the Fourth Division for the first time
1961Walter Galbraith becomes manager for a short time only
1961Dave Russell appointed manager
1962Tranmere promoted back to Division 3 after only one year in the Forth Division
1967Tranmere win promotion to the Third Division
1967New 4,000 seat Main Stand erected
1969Jackie Wright becomes manager
1972Ron Yeats becomes manager
1973Replacement roof to the cowshed installed after strong storm
1975Tranmere are relegated to the Fourth Division
1975John King begins his first stint as manager
1976After spending only one year in Division Four, Rovers win promotion
1979Tranmere are relegated back to the Fourth Division for the final time
1980Bryan Hamilton becomes player manager
1981Finishing 21st in Division 4, Tranmere apply for re-election
1985The Kop is closed and main stand reduced to 1000 as Tranmere's entire capacity is dropped to 8000 on safety grounds
1985Frank Worthington takes over as player-manager
1987Millionaire Peter Johnson takes over running of the club to restore some stability after American Bruce Osterman ran up large debts
1987Ronnie Moore briefly becomes player-manager
1987John King joins Tranmere as manager for a second time
1988New barriers and fences set up, an electronic scoreboard is purchased from Goodison Park and new floodlights are switched on
1889Tranmere finish 2nd in the league to win promotion back to Division Three
1988September - Tranmere's current floodlights first used
1990Tranmere are promoted through the playoffs, beating Bolton at Wembley to earn a place in the 'old' 2nd Division
1993Tranmere are moved into the 'new' First Division due to reorganisation by the football league, alongside the creation of the Premiership
1993A £3.1 million redevlopment of the stadium creates 3 new sides and takes the capacity to 16,789
1996April - John King is relieved of management duties to become 'Director of Football'. Striker John Aldridge becomes player-manager
2001Tranmere are relegated from Division 1.
2001March - John Aldridge resigns as manager and Kevin Sheedy takes over as caretaker manager.
2001May - Dave Watson installed as Tranmere Manager
2002August - Dave Watson sacked as manager after two crushing pre-season friendlies
2002September - Ray Mathias appointed as manager
2003September - Ray Mathias sacked as manager. John McMahon made caretaker manager.
2003October - Brian Little installed as manager.
