| Forget
the Everton Vs Manchester United FA cup tie, the biggest game of the
weekend for Tranmere fans was played at The Kingston Communications
Stadium between Hull City and Wrexham.
With
Rovers enjoying the luxury of a free weekend due to Brentford's
involvement in the cup, they were hoping local rivals Wrexham could
do them a favour and put a dent in the Tigers' promotion hopes.
But
any such hopes were dashed in the 35th minute when former Notts
County striker Danny Allsopp put Hull 1-0 up - a lead which the
home side kept until half-time. Soon after the break, Allsopp sealed
his brace as City doubled their advantage over the struggling Dragons.
But Wrexham, buoyed by Tuesday's 5-3 LDV victory at Oldham, refused
to surrender and substitute Hector Sam gave some hope with his 75th
minute strike. This was to prove no more than scant consolation
however as Peter Taylor's side managed to hold out for the win.
Hull's
win puts them four points ahead of Rovers on 62 with the same number
of matches played. Top-of-the-table Luton won again to move seven
points ahead of Hull in second and 11 clear of Rovers in third after
their 1-0 away triumph at Bradford, making it unlikely that the
Whites will catch them.
Other
results mean that Sheffield Wednesday and Hartlepool are now just
three points behind Rovers on 55, in fourth and fifth place respectively.
Bournemouth, which is where Tranmere travel next Saturday, also
won to move into the play-off places on 50 points.
These
results add extra importance to Tuesday night's home fixture against
Huddersfield Town for Brian Little's men as they look to extend
their unbeaten league run to six matches. The way the league table
is beginning to take shape, the 5th of March fixture at home to
Hull looks like it could define the season for the Superwhites.
