| Some
historical facts about the football league |
- When
the League began in 1888, it comprised only 12 teams including Accrington and
Burnley.
- The
only current Premiership Common Names that began in the leage were Aston Villa,
Blackburn, Bolton and Everton.
- The
First Division and Second Division were not created until 1892
- When
formed, the Second Division included Small Heath, Darwen, Ardwick, Burton Swifts,
Bootle and Burslem.
- Liverpool
and Woolwich Arsenal made their first appearance in Divison Two in 1893
- The
name Manchester City first made its appearance in the League in Division Two in
1894, eight years before Manchester United in 1902. (Although these teams had
previously played under different names).
- By
the outbreak of WW1 the top division was more familiar; including Everton, Man
City, Sunderland, Middlesborough, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bolton, Man
United, Chelsea and Tottenham.
- In
1920 the Third Division was created but the following year this was split into
Third Division (North) and Third Division (South).
- In
the Scottlish League 1897 was the first year that Celtic and Rangers took the
two top spots.
- During
WW1, the Scottish Leagues played on while English football halted until 1919
